Early Shen Yun Pieces: How the Monkey King Came to Be (2012 Production)

The Monkey King is the central character in China's classic novel Journey to the West. Born out of a rock, he has magical powers that allow him to travel freely between Heaven and Earth.

His adventures eventually lead him to Heaven's peach orchard. While eating his fill, he startles a group of fairies picking peaches for a celestial banquet. They inform the Monkey King that he is not on the guest list, enraging him with the snub.

While the peacemaking attempts of a friendly Taoist fail, Monkey wreaks havoc in Heaven until Buddha traps him in his palm. He pleads forgiveness from the Goddess of Mercy, who appoints him to guard a monk journeying westward for Buddhist scriptures.
